The International Standard series ISO/IEC 19788 specifies sets of metadata elements together with their attributes for the description of learning resources. This also includes the specification of rules governing the identification of these data elements and attributes. These metadata elements, summarized in datasets then form the description of a metadata learning resource, that is the "Metadata Learning Resource (MLR) record". ISO/IEC 19788-1 provides principles, rules and structures for the specification of the description of a learning resource. ISO/IEC 19788-1 identifies and specifies both the attributes of a data element as well as the rules governing their use. Adoption of Parts 1 and 2 of the International standard series ISO/IEC 19788 into the European body of standards serves for propagation of the application of common European Standards instead of different national standards for description of metadata for learning resources. Adoption of the International Standard into the European body of standards ensures an improved coordination between learning opportunities and learning resources. ISO/IEC 19788-1:2011 has been prepared by Subcommittee JTC 1/SC 36 "Learning Technologies" of ISO/IEC Joint Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1 "Information Technology" and adopted as EN ISO/IEC 19788-1 by Technical Committee CEN/TC 353 "Information and communication technologies for learning, education and training", the secretariat of which is held by UNI (Italy). The responsible committee at DIN is the Information Technology and selected IT Applications Standards Committee (NIA). Currently there is no national mirror committee to JTC 1/SC 36 or CEN/TC 353, the corresponding work attended is by a rapporteur.
