Overview

DIN EN ISO/IEC 15423 defines test specifications for scanners and decoders of linear bar codes, taking into account the environmental conditions, configuration, interfaces for connection to complete systems and other parameters. Bar code technologies are based on the recognition of patterns consisting of bars and spaces of defined dimensions, according to rules defining the translation of characters into such patterns. A number of procedures are provided for encoding information in bar code form. Such procedures are known as symbologies. A full set of translation rules is called symbology specification. Bar code symbols can be produced with a wide variety of printing and other techniques. All symbol dimensions can be uniformly scaled to meet the particular requirements of a specific application. There is a wide range of bar code reading equipment using various scanning techniques, which enable bar code symbols to be read under many different conditions. Bar code symbols may be either "linear", that means, they may be read in a single dimension, where the height of the bars provides redundancy of information only, or "two dimensional", either in stacked rows to be read unidimensionally with multiple scans, or as a matrix of elements which also require two dimensional reading. Bar code reading equipment must be capable of reliably converting the information represented as a bar code symbol into a form meaningful to the host computer system or otherwise to the user. The manufacturers of bar code equipment, the producers of bar code symbols and the users of bar code technology therefore require publicly available standard test specifications for bar code reading equipment to ensure the accuracy and consistency of performance of their equipment. DIN EN ISO/IEC 15423:2010 contains the English version of the International Standard ISO/IEC 15423:2009 which has been prepared by ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 31 "Automatic identification and data capture techniques". The European standardization committee CEN/TC 225 "AIDC technologies" has decided to adopt, after ISO/IEC 15423:2004 and according to ISO/IEC 15423:2005, the completely revised updated version of the International Standard into the European body of standards. This new edition replaces EN ISO/IEC 15423:2005. The Committee responsible for DIN EN ISO/IEC 15423 at DIN is NA 043-01-31 AA "Automatische Identifikation und Datenerfassungsverfahren" ("Automatic identification and data capture techniques") at NIA.
