Overview

This document describes which configurations shall be taken into account for bar code digital imaging and printing in order to fulfill the quality and performance requirements stipulated by the users of bar code technologies. For this purpose, the standard identifies the attributes which shall be taken into account for the various system configurations and specifies minimum requirements for those attributes. DIN EN ISO/IEC 15419 then defines test methods for assessing the conformance of a system with this standard by means of its attributes. Bar code technologies are based on the recognition of patterns encoded in bars and spaces of defined dimensions according to rules defining the translation of characters into such patterns. A full set of translation rules is called symbology specification. Bar code digital imaging systems must be capable of reliably converting the information to be encoded into a bar code symbol meeting the symbology specification and application requirements if the technology is to fulfill its task to identify and correctly interpret these patterns. Such systems comprise two major components, namely the hardware component which produces the physical image of the bar code symbol on paper, photographic film, printing plate, or other substrate, and the software component which converts the input data into digital instructions which are necessary to control the hardware component. Each component can take various forms and perform differing functions. Manufacturers of bar code equipment, the producers of bar code symbols and the users of bar code technology therefore require publicly available standard test specifications for bar code digital imaging and printing to ensure the accuracy and consistency of performance of a system. DIN EN ISO/IEC 15419 lays down general principles which are decisive for both aforementioned components during imaging and printing; they are supplemented by specific details which are crucial to a number of major categories of software and hardware. DIN EN ISO/IEC 15419 is intended to be used in conjunction with other International Standards which detail the methodology for assessing the quality of a bar code symbol, such as DIN EN ISO/IEC 15416. This standard does not apply to bar code masters, which are covered by DIN EN ISO/IEC 15421. DIN EN ISO/IEC 15419:2010 contains the English version of the International Standard ISO/IEC 15419:2009-06 which has been prepared by ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 31 "Automatic identification and data capture techniques". The European standardization committee CEN/TC 225 "AIDC technologies" has decided to adopt, after ISO/IEC 15419:2001 and according to ISO/IEC 15419:2003, the completely revised updated version of the International standard into the European body of standards. This new edition replaces EN ISO/IEC 15419:2002. The Committee responsible for DIN EN ISO/IEC 15419 at DIN is NA 043-01-31 AA "Automatische Identifikation und Datenerfassungsverfahren" ("Automatic identification and data capture techniques") at NIA.
