Overview

An important ergonomic factor for the daily work in the dental office is the appropriate lighting of the dentist's treatment rooms. In addition to the general interior room lighting of the dental office by artificial lighting, a good illumination of the oral cavity of the patient is required. In order to see properly, operating lights are used the requirements of which are specified in DIN EN ISO 9680. These are optical requirements (such as illuminance, illumination pattern, illumination uniformity, bright spots in the illumination pattern, colour separation, colour temperature, hard shadow), mechanical requirements (moving parts, operating controls, rotary movement, handling and mechanical adjustment, stability, cleaning and disinfection) and electrical requirements. Requirements for colour rendering index have been introduced. Head lamps and other auxiliary light sources (for example for dental hand pieces) are excluded. Due to the increasing use of LED lights the emission spectrum of which can lead to colour matching problems, a revision of ISO 9680 has been decided in 2010. In the course of this, the topic colour rendering index will be further discussed in future, especially the implementation for spectrally selective LEDs. Since white-light LEDs with energy in the blue light region are increasingly used, the influence of the operating lights on filling materials, for example composites, has to be considered. A new evaluation scale has been established which defines the requirements for a composite modus, irrespective of the technology of the light source. Studies on the dentist's vision and the ergonomics have been assessed and incorporated. This standard contains requirements and test methods for dental operating lights which are intended for illuminating the oral cavity of patients. It also contains specifications on manufacturers' instructions for use, marking and packing. This standard applies to all operating lights, irrespective of the type of the light source. This standard has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 106 "Dentistry" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 55 "Dentistry" (secretariat: DIN, Germany). The responsible committee at DIN is Working Group NA 014-00-05-05 AK "Behandlungsleuchten" of the Working Committee NA 014-00-05 AA "Zahnärztliche Ausrüstung" ("Dental equipment") of NADENT.
