Overview

The standard series DIN EN ISO 8980 specifies requirements and test methods for uncut finished and mounted spectacle lenses. This Part 3 which is now available as a revised edition deals with the requirements for the transmittance properties. Spectacle lenses attenuating solar radiation are also included in the scope. The standard is, however, not applicable to spectacle lenses having particular transmittance or absorption characteristics prescribed for medical reasons; it is also not applicable for products where specific personal protective equipment transmittance standards apply as well as for products intended for direct observation of the sun, such as for solar-eclipse viewing. With respect to the previously valid edition of the standard (March 2005), the scope has been extended to include requirements for lenses fitted in a spectacle frame. Furthermore, the following modifications have been made: - the symbols used to designate the luminous transmittances of photochromic lenses have been changed; - tint descriptions and tolerances on luminous transmittance have been specified; - some changes have been made to the categories for luminous transmittance and the related permissible transmittance in the ultraviolet solar spectral range; - the spectral transmittance requirements of spectacle lenses intended for road use and driving have been transferred from DIN EN ISO 14889 to this standard; - some changes have been made to the requirements for polarizing spectacle lenses. The start of application of the new edition is 2014-01-01. Due to extensive modifications the previous edition (March 2015) can be used in parallel until 2016-10-31. The standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 172 "Optics and photonics" in collaboration with CEN/TC 170 "Ophthalmic optics" (both secretariats: DIN, Germany). At DIN the responsible Working Committee is NA 027-01-08 AA "Augenoptik" ("Ophthalmic optics"), Working Group "Brillengläser" ("Spectacle lenses") at NAFuO.
