This standard specifies mechanical and physical properties of set screws and similar threaded fasteners made of carbon steel and alloy steel when tested at an ambient temperature range of 10 °C to 35 °C. Set screws and similar threaded fasteners which conform to the requirements of this standard are evaluated at that ambient temperature range. They are classified to specified hardness classes and are intended for use under compressive stress only. This document is applicable to set screws and similar threaded fasteners with a pitch thread of M1,6 to M30, and a fine pitch thread of M8×1 to M30×2. With regard to the existing standard, the materials for class 45H have been clearly specified and subdivided. The minimum carbon content for hardness classes 22H, 33H and 45H has been increased. The specifications for the maximum surface hardness and the surface integrity have been revised. The determination of torque strength has been expanded to hexalobular socket set screws. Information on hydrogen embrittlement relief and for application under tensile stress has been incorporated. This standard (EN ISO 898-5:2012) has been prepared by ISO/TC 2 "Fasteners", in collaboration with CEN/TC 185 "Fasteners", the secretariats of which are held by DIN (Germany). The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 067-00-02 AA "Verbindungselemente mit metrischem Außengewinde" ("Fasteners with metric external thread") of the Fasteners Standards Committee (FMV) at DIN, the German Institute for Standardization e. V.
