This standard specifies mechanical and physical properties of nuts with coarse thread and fine pitch thread made of carbon steel and alloy steel when tested at an ambient temperature range of 10 °C to 35 °C. Nuts conforming to the requirements of this standard are evaluated at that ambient temperature range. It is possible that they do not retain the specified mechanical and physical properties at elevated and/or lower temperatures. This part of ISO 898 is applicable to nuts made of carbon steel or alloy steel with coarse thread from M5 to M39 and a minimum height of 0,45D as well as a minimum outside diameter or width across flats of 1,45D, which are able to mate with bolts, screws and studs with property classes according to ISO 898-1. With respect to the previous version DIN EN 20898-2:1994-04 the scope has been limited with M5 as the minimum nominal diameter and the nominal diameters M3, M3,5 and M4 and property class 4 have been deleted. The designation system for nut types has been supplemented to include style 0 for thin nuts. The subdivision into nut types for the proof load values has been omitted in that each of the lower proof load values has been deleted. The proof load test and the hardness test have been rendered more precise. The European Standard EN ISO 898-2:2012 has been prepared by ISO/TC 2 "Fasteners" in collaboration with CEN/TC 185 "Fasteners", the secretariats of which are held by DIN (Germany). The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 067-00-03 AA "Verbindungselemente mit metrischem Innengewinde" ("Fasteners with metric internal thread") at the Fasteners Standards Committee (FMV) at DIN, the German Institute for Standardization e. V.
