The test standard on rubber and plastics hoses and hose assemblies has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 45 "Rubber and rubber products", SC 1 "Hoses" (secretariat: DSM, Malaysia) of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and has been adopted by Technical Committee CEN/TC 218 "Rubber and plastics hoses and hose assemblies" (secretariat: BSI). The responsible national Standards Committee is NA 045-02-12 AA "Schläuche" ("Hoses") of the Rubber Technology Standards Committee (FAKAU). This International Standard specifies three methods for the determination of the volume of gas diffusing through a rubber or plastics hose or hose assembly in a specified time. Method 1: determination of the permeability to the test gas through the complete hose or length of tubing with or without reinforcement, excluding end-fittings. The permeability is calculated with respect to the length of the hose with or without reinforcement. Method 2: determination of the permeability to the test gas at the hose/fitting interface. This method is used for the determination of the permeability characteristics of hoses with an unpricked cover, when the gas usually leaks from the textile reinforcement at the cut ends. The permeability is calculated with respect to the length of the hose. Method 3: precise determination of the permeability of a hose or hose assembly to the test gas. The permeability is calculated with respect to the surface area of the hose lining. The methods are only applicable to test gases which are insoluble in water. Although the results are expressed in the same units for methods 1 and 2, the results obtained will not necessarily be comparable in the case of unpricked and pricked hoses intended for the same application as different test times are specified for the two methods; thus different permeabilities can be assumed. Method 3 is the preferred method.
