Laboratory glass and plastics ware for measuring liquid volumes are the most frequently used instruments in laboratories. The standard defines the basic and metrological requirements for the construction and design of these volumetric instruments. The standard describes three accuracy classes and the relationship between error limits and the inner diameter of the device on the meniscus formed by the liquid to be measured. Since the ring marks or scales attached to the volumetric instruments have a significant influence on the metrological accuracy, three different scale divisions (Type I to III) are described in detail. This basic standard forms the basis for numerous product standards for individual volumetric instruments such as burettes (DIN EN ISO 385), single-volume pipettes (DIN EN ISO 648), graduated pipettes (DIN EN ISO 835), volumetric flasks (DIN EN ISO 1042), graduated measuring cylinders (DIN EN ISO 4788) and many others. This European Standard (EN ISO 384:2015) was adopted by CEN-TC 332 "Laboratory Equipment" from the International Organization for Standardization ISO. The standard has been prepared by ISO Technical Committee TC 48 "Laboratory equipment". All of the committees specified are under German secretariat. The responsible German mirror committee is Working Committee NA 055-01-08 AA "Volumenmessgeräte" ("Volumetric instruments") at DIN Standards Committee Laboratory Devices and Installations. It played a leading role in the preparation of this document. This standard differs from DIN ISO 384:1978-12 as follows: a) the scope of the standard has been extended to include volumetric instruments made from plastics; b) volumetric instruments of class AS have been added; c) the dependence of the error limit on the inner pipe diameter has been redefined with an equation; d) the thickness of graduation lines has been modified; e) Annex A and Annex C have been deleted and Annex B reformulated.
This document replaces DIN ISO 384:1978-12 .
