Nearly 40 years of development for a successful endodontics has led to the situation that nowadays higher precision and an ergonomically relaxed behaviour are possible. Modern endodontics can in many cases provide a favourable prognosis for long-term dental tooth preservation - and work is considerably easier than five or ten years ago. Standardized root-canal instruments make an important contribution. The standard specifies general requirements and test methods for root-canal instruments for endodontic applications which have not yet been described in other parts of the DIN EN ISO 3630 series thus far. The standard describes shaping and cleaning instruments for root canals. The standard contains requirements for size, marking, product designation, safety considerations, labelling and packaging. The International Standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 106/SC 4/WG 9 "Endodontic instruments" (secretariat: ANSI, USA), together with CEN/TC 55 "Dentistry") (secretariat: DIN). The responsible Working Committee is NA 014-00-04 AA "Rotierende Instrumente" ("Rotary instruments") of the Dentistry Standards Committee (NADENT) at DIN.
