This standard specifies requirements for classification of covered rod electrodes, based on the all-weld metal in the heat-treated condition, for manual metal arc welding of ferritic and martensitic creep-resisting and low alloy elevated temperature steels. This standard contains a combined specification for classification utilizing a system based upon the chemical composition of the all-weld metal, with requirements for the yield strength and impact energy of the all-weld metal, or utilizing a system based upon the tensile strength and the chemical composition of the all-weld metal. The International Standard ISO 3580 has been prepared by applying the cohabitation principle, that means, two approaches, which are subdivided into A and B, are specified for the same subject to be standardized. Approach A mainly reflects the European specifications; approach B mainly reflects the specifications in the Pacific Rim. It shall be noted that it shall be laid down according to which approach (A or B) products shall be manufactured or supplied before the standard is applied. With respect to the previous document, the scope has been revised with respect to the specifications for impact energy, amongst others. The International Standard ISO 3580:2010 has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 44 "Welding and allied processes" and has been adopted identically as EN ISO 3580:2011 by Technical Committee CEN/TC 121 "Welding" (secretariat: DIN, Germany). The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 092-00-03 AA "Schweißzusätze (DVS AG W 5)" ("Welding consumables (DVS AG W 5)") at the Welding Standards Committee (NAS).
