This standard establishes codes that represent the current names of countries, dependencies, and other areas of particular geopolitical interest. The basis for this are lists of country names obtained from the United Nations. The standard facilitates the compatibility of country codes thereby simplifying international and national exchange of information. The national committee responsible for this standard is NA 009-00-10 AA "Länderzeichen" ("Country codes") at DIN. This standard is based on the European standard EN ISO 3166-1 which contains the German translation of the English and French country names listed in ISO 3166-1 including the relevant alphabetic 2-character codes, alphabetic 3-character codes and numeric codes. The names of countries listed in the German version of DIN EN ISO 3166-1 are taken from the official list published by the Federal Foreign Office in Germany and the corresponding lists in Austria and Switzerland. Changes to German country names and/or codes as compared to the previous edition of DIN EN ISO 3166-1:1997 are also indicated (does not affect the English version of this standard). Further specifications relating to codes for names of countries are given in the following standard: ISO 3166-2 "Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions - Part 2: Country subdivision code". The German version has been withdrawn on 2008-07-01. The application of the ISO standard was considered sufficient. DIN ISO 3166-3 "Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions - Part 3: Code for formerly used names of countries". More detailed information on DIN EN ISO 3166-1 may be obtained from the DIN Standards Committee Information and Documentation (NABD), 10772 Berlin, telephone: 030 2601-2566, telefax: 030 2601-42566, E-mail: kerstin.buelow@din.de, Internet: www.nabd.din.de. NABD is also responsible for issuing information on changes to DIN EN ISO 3166-1. These are usually published on the NABD homepage at approximately the same time as ISO publishes the ISO 3166-1 Newsletter. NABD has also set up an E-mail distribution list which provides current information on changes to DIN EN ISO 3166-1. If you wish to use this free service, please contact the NABD.
