Short description
This European Standard specifies the principle, the essential performance criteria and QA/QC procedures of an automatic method for measuring methane (CH4) using the flame ionisation detection (FID) in the waste gas of stationary sources. It is applicable to measurements of methane in dry or wet waste gases. The method allows the continuous monitoring with permanently installed measuring systems as well as intermittent measurements of methane emissions.
Overview

Methane (CH4) is a gas of relevance to the climate and contributes directly to the atmospheric greenhouse effect. After carbon dioxide, greenhouse gas has the second highest anthropogenic influence. Since pre-industrial times methane concentration in the atmosphere has increased by approximately 150 % and the trend is still upward. The emissions of methane originate from natural and anthropogenic sources, whereby the portion from anthropogenic sources is higher. Stationary anthropogenic sources are, for example, composting plants, gas firing systems and the use of biogas (for instance gas engines). This standard describes the principles and specifies the essential performance requirements and QA/QC procedures of an automatic method for measuring methane in the waste gas of stationary sources using flame ionisation detection (FID). It is applicable to measurements of methane in dry and wet waste gases. The method allows the continuous monitoring of methane emissions with permanently installed measuring systems as well as intermittent measurements. The standard is suitable for test laboratories, regulating authorities and plant operators.
