Overview

This standard specifies auditory signals used as a means of feedback via the operation or condition of products which shall be understood by users, even if they are blind or have severe visual impairments. It is applicable to auditory signals of a fixed frequency used in general applications and not to signals of a variable frequency. The target group are product designers who develop electronic and electrical objects for everyday use. By taking into account the standard it is ensured that the auditory signals of these appliances are also understood by a wide range of old and disabled people. It does not describe alarm and signal devices for fire, gas leak, or crime prevention, which are installed for legal reasons. The standard does not deal with electronic chimes, speech information systems or other communication devices, such as telephones. This standard does not deal with auditory danger signals for public or work areas which are covered by ISO 7731, ISO 8201 and ISO 11429. The Committee responsible for this standard is NA 023-00-02 GA "Gemeinschaftsarbeitsausschuss NAErg/NIA: Grundlagen zur barrierefreien Gestaltung/Accessibility" ("Joint Working Committee NAErg/NIA: Basics for barrier-free design/accessibility") at DIN.
