Overview

This International Standard describes a method for the determination of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the exchangeable ions Al3+, Ca2+, Fe2+, K+, Mg2+, Na+ in soils. The measure for the exchangeable cations (CEC) reflects the number of negative binding sites of cation exchangers in the soil and depends on both the chemical as well as mechanical composition of the soil. Thus, the CEC presents an important characteristic value of the soil. Quantitative determination of exchanged cations in the extract is carried out by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The described method has been tested and validated in an international inter-laboratory trial. Details and results can also be found in this standard.
