This standard specifies a method for determining the flexural properties of rigid and semi-rigid plastics under defined conditions. A standard test specimen is defined, but parameters are included for alternative specimen sizes for use where appropriate. A range of test speeds is also included. This standard differs from DIN EN ISO 178:2011-04 as follows: The European Amendment has been incorporated: a) 5.5.1.1 and 5.5.1.2 have been completely revised and are now directly allocated to 5.5.1; b) 8.1 and Figure 5 have been completely revised; c) 8.2 has been revised with regard to the thickness (previously mean thickness); d) in clause 11, item d) has been extended: "the shape and dimensions of the test specimens and, if applicable, the dimensions of the tips used". The International Standard ISO 178 has been prepared by ISO/TC 61/SC 2 "Mechanical properties" (secretariat: AENOR, Spain). CEN/TC 249 "Plastics", the secretariat of which is held by NBN, Belgium, is responsible for the European standard. On the national level, the committee responsible for the standard is Working Committee NA 054-01-02 AA "Mechanische Eigenschaften und Probekörperherstellung" ("Mechanical properties and preparation of test specimens") of the Plastics Standards Committee (FNK) at DIN.
