In orthodontics, malformations of human teeth and jaws are corrected by prophylactically influencing the development of the dentition and reducing and eliminating pathological phenomena in the mandibulo-maxillary region. Orthodontic appliances are an important tool for this purpose. In their manufacture coiled springs are used for some applications. The definition of clear quality requirements for these coiled springs is an important contribution to first-class orthodontics, which is the state of the art in Germany. This standard contains requirements and test methods for coiled springs used in fixed and removable appliances. The standard describes the terms, the necessary specifications and the associated test procedures. Information on marking and labeling on the packaging is also specified. This International Standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 106/SC 1/WG 13 "Orthodontic materials" (secretariat: ANSI, USA), in collaboration with CEN/TC 55 "Dentistry" (secretariat: DIN). The responsible committee at DIN is Working Committee NA 014-00-18 AA "Kieferorthopädische Produkte" ("Orthodontic materials") at NADENT.
