This International Standard determines the fuel quality classes and specifications of graded wood briquettes. This International Standard covers only wood briquettes produced from the following raw materials (see ISO 17225-1, Table 1): Forest, plantation and other virgin wood; by-products and residues from wood processing industry; used wood. In order to leave no doubt, demolition wood has not been added to the scope of this European Standard. Demolition wood is "used wood arising from demolition of buildings or civil engineering installations". Thermally treated biomass briquettes (such as torrefied briquettes) are not included in the scope of this International Standard. Torrefaction is a mild pre-treatment of biomass at a temperature between 200 °C to 300 °C. The objective of this International Standard is to provide unambiguous and clear classification principles for solid biofuels and to serve as a tool to enable efficient trading of biofuels and to enable good understanding between seller and buyer as well as a tool for communication with equipment manufacturers. This standard will also facilitate authority permission procedures and reporting. This International Standard supports the use of graded wood briquettes for residential, small commercial and public building applications. This document (EN ISO 17225-3:2014) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 238 "Solid biofuels" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 335 "Solid biofuels" the secretariat of which is held by SIS (Sweden). This document together with more documents currently being prepared by ISO/TC 238 is intended to replace the DIN EN 14961 series "Solid biofuels - Fuel specifications and classes". The responsible German body is Working Committee NA 062-05-82 AA "Biogene Festbrennstoffe" ("Solid biofuels") at DIN Standards Committee Materials Testing (NMP).
