Overview

This part of the ISO 17201 and EN ISO 17201 standard series, respectively, has been prepared by ISO/TC 43/SC 1 "Noise", in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 211 "Acoustics", the secretariats of which are held by DS (Denmark). On the national level, the Committee responsible for this part is Mirror Committee NA 001-01-02-07 AA "Akustik - Geräusche von Schießplätzen" ("Acoustics - Noise from shooting ranges"). In general national or regional authorities specify how noise from shooting ranges is determined with guidelines, rules and regulations and compared with corresponding limit values. In situations with no official regulations the management of a shooting range may and should use the method described in this part of the standard series. The management of the shooting range is responsible for monitoring the noise that is emitted into the environment due to shooting activities, and for complying with guidelines, rules and regulations. Part 5 of the ISO 17201 standard series shall be understood as a tool to achieve this goal. It deals with the control of noise at specified reception points outside shooting ranges based on measured or calculated data. Thereby a method for noise management to monitor the equivalent sound pressure level by managing the number of shots for each combination of weapon type, ammunition type, the locations of firing, and the firing direction that is used in the shooting range. Every combination can be described by its exposure level or its maximum sound level. Therefore appropriate criteria and classifications have been normatively specified in part 5. The evaluation of the number of shots is directly related to the sound exposure levels produced by each combination at the reception points. By relating the number of shots to the corresponding limiting values management objectives, such as minimising the noise load in the neighbourhood, can be met. This part of the ISO 17201 standard series shall be understood as a planning standard and tool for monitoring the shooting activities. The standard addresses especially shooting range operators, manufacturers of ammunition and weapons for sport shooting, as well as acoustic consultants and authorities who deal with the determination, specification or monitoring of sound exposure of shooting ranges.
