Oral hygiene is important for the preservation of teeth. In addition to toothbrushes and toothpaste, manual interdental brushes are also needed for the elderly. Their main purpose is the mechanical removal of plaque, mainly from the approximal area (area between the teeth). Requirements and test methods for the properties of manual interdental brushes are described in order to increase the safety in use of these products. Electrically operated interdental brushes and manual toothbrushes are excluded. Requirements and test methods are specified for the external properties, tuft removal force, material fatigue and chemical stress, the associated sampling, the necessary information in the test report and the information for marking and labeling as well as for the packaging, which is thus also prescribed. The International Standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 106/SC 7/WG 3 "Oral care products" (secretariat: DIN) together with CEN/TC 55 "Dentistry" (secretariat: DIN). Working Committee NA 014-00-19 AA "Mundpflegeprodukte" ("Oral hygiene products") at DIN NADENT is responsible for this standard.
