In orthodontics, displasias of human teeth and jaws are corrected by prophylactically influencing the dentition development and reducing and removing pathological phenomena in the mandibulo-maxillary area. Orthodontic appliances are an important means for this purpose. During their production, orthodontic wires are used. For example, brackets fixed in the patient's mouth are connected with wires in order to exert forces. The specification of clear requirements for these wires is an important contribution to first-class orthodontics like it is the state-of-the-art in Germany. This standard specifies requirements and test methods for wires to be used in fixed and removable orthodontic appliances. It applies for preformed orthodontic archwires but excludes springs and other preformed components. This standard describes terms and definitions, the necessary information and the associated test methods. Labelling information on the package are also specified. This International Standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 106/SC 1/WG 13 "Orthodontic products" (secretariat: ANSI, USA), in collaboration with CEN/TC 55 "Dentistry" (secretariat: DIN). At DIN the responsible Working Committee is NA 014-00-18 AA "Kieferorthopädische Produkte" ("Orthodontic materials") of NADENT.
