This standard specifies fundamental requirements for uncut finished spectacle lenses. It is not applicable to protective spectacle lenses. The standard concretises the relevant requirements set out in EU Directive 93/42/EEC on medical devices. Compared with the previously valid version, the transmittance specifications have been revised; reference is now made to the modified new version of DIN EN 8980-3 [see 4.5]. This implies: - modification of symbols for designation of transmittance of photochromic spectacle lenses; - specification of designations for degrees of lens tint and of tolerances for tinted spectacle lenses; - partial modification of the acceptable transmittance related with the categories for spectral transmittance; - modification of the requirements for spectacle lenses for drivers with colour perception problems; partial modification of the requirements for polarizing spectacle lenses. Furthermore, the criterion for the assessment of lens fracture has been modified [see 4.4, item a)]. The standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 172/SC 7 "Ophthalmic optics and instruments" in collaboration with CEN/TC 170 "Ophthalmic optics" (both secretariats: DIN, Germany). At DIN the responsible Working Committee is NA 027-01-08 AA "Augenoptik" ("Ophthalmic optics"), Working Group "Brillengläser" ("Spectacle lenses") at NAFuO.
