Overview

Contact lens care products are used in combination with contact lenses. These products are used for rinsing, cleaning and disinfecting, storing and moisturising contact lenses, for enhancing the wearing comfort and for the conditioning of contact lenses. Where the contact lens care product (solution) itself does not act antimicrobially, an antimicrobial preservative can be added in order to inhibit the reproduction of micro-organisms which may enter the contact lens care product due to repeated use and subsequent storage. This International Standard gives the test method and performance characteristics regarding the effect of the preservatives. The method has been adopted from pharmacopoeias wherein the test duration has been limited to 28 days. The informative annexes give four examples of test methods for preservatives developed by manufacturers of contact lens care products in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of preservatives for products with a shelf life of more than 28 days.
