This part of ISO 14688, together with ISO 14688-1, establishes the basic principles for the identification and classification of soils on the basis of those characteristics most commonly used for soils for engineering purposes. The relevant characteristics may vary and therefore, for particular projects or materials, more detailed subdivisions for identification and classification may be necessary. Identification and description of soil are covered by ISO 14688-1. In this part of ISO 14688, soils are grouped into classes of similar composition and geotechnical properties and with respect to their suitability for geotechnical engineering purposes such as - foundations, - ground improvements, - roads, - dams, and - drainage systems. This part of ISO 14688 is applicable to natural or redeposited soil and similar filling material, whereby it does not cover a classification of soil itself. Identification and description of rock are covered by ISO 14689-1. The Committee responsible for this standard is NA 005-05-02 AA "Benennung, Beschreibung und Klassifizierung von Boden und Fels (SpA zu ISO/TC 182/SC 1/WG 1 und CEN/TC 341)" ("Identification and classification of soil and rock (Mirror Committee of ISO/TC 182/SC 1/WG 1 and CEN/TC 341)") at DIN.
