Enterprises are increasingly asked to provide well-founded quantitative information regarding the environmental impacts which originate from their products. The focus is on data which is suitable for the provision of detailed information to business partners and for the communication with investors and users. The Type III environmental declaration is the basis to provide these groups with quantified environmental data for a product. Type III environmental declarations are also referred to as eco-profiles, environmental declarations of product and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). They provide product information which are based on life cycle assessments and enable ecological comparisons between products fulfilling the same function. Such declarations are based on independently verified life cycle assessment data which are in accordance with the DIN EN ISO 14040 standard series and can be expanded by additional environmental information. The standard DIN EN ISO 14025 establishes the principles and specifies the procedures for developing Type III environmental declaration programmes and Type III environmental declarations. It specifically contains requirements for the use of the DIN EN ISO 14040 series of standards in the development of Type III environmental declaration programmes and Type III environmental declarations as well as operating rules for the testing and verification of LCA data and the Type III environmental declaration itself by a third party. The standard also contains additional requirements for the development of such Type III environmental declarations which address the consumer, a Type III environmental declaration programme development and operation scheme and - with a refillable, recyclable glass bottle for beverages - an example illustrating the development of a Type III environmental declaration. The International Standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 207/SC 3 "Environmental labelling". Now the standard has been adopted as a European Standard under the Unique Acceptance Procedure (UAP). The already published DIN ISO 14025 is being replaced by the newly released DIN EN ISO 14025. The work is nationally supervised by Working Committee NA 172-00-03 AA of NAGUS.
