This International Standard specifies general performance requirements for ergonomics, innocuousness, size designation, ageing, compatibility and marking of protective clothing and the information to be supplied by the manufacturer with the protective clothing. This standard is only used in combination with other standards containing requirements for specific protective performance. This standard serves as a basic standard for product standards for placing protective clothing on the market in accordance with Directive 89/686/EEC for personal fall protection equipment. This shall ensure that a uniform safety level is specified. Test institutes, certification bodies and manufacturers are potential users of this standard. This standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association and supports essential requirements of the EU Directives. This standard has been prepared by CEN/TC 162 "Protective clothing including hand and arm protection and lifejackets", the secretariat of which is held by DIN. The responsible German Standards Committee is Working Committee NA 075-05-01 AA "Allgemeine Anforderungen an Schutzkleidung" ("General requirements for protective clothing") of the Personal Protective Equipment Standards Committee (NPS) at DIN.
