Standard DIN EN ISO 13666 specifies terms, definitions and symbols for spectacle lenses. It contains basic terms relating to ophthalmic optics as well as specific terms for semi-finished spectacle lens blanks and finished spectacle lenses and fitting purposes. Terms relating to processes for fabrication and surface treatment (other than specific coatings) and terms relating to defects in materials are not included; these are given in ISO 9802 (multilingual edition, inclusive German). The generic standard DIN EN ISO 13666 is directed at all experts dealing with spectacle lenses, whether on part of the manufacturer, ophthalmic opticians, research and science in this special field or the respective educational and training institutes. In the revised new edition, a large number of modifications to the definitions of the previous terms have been made. Furthermore, many new terms were added, for example for the measurement of the dioptric power, off axis power, progressive power lenses, including such lenses with degressive design, for gradient-tinted lenses or lens coatings. Standard DIN EN ISO 13666 has been prepared by ISO/TC 172/SC 7 "Optics and ophthalmic instruments" (secretariat: DIN) with German participation. At DIN Working Committee NA 027-01-08 AA "Augenoptik" ("Ophthalmic optics"), Working Groups "Terms" and "Spectacle lenses" at NAFuO are responsible.
