Overview

This document (EN ISO 105-C06:2009) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38 "Textiles", in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 248 "Textile and textile products", the secretariat of which is held by BSI (United Kingdom). The responsible German Committee is NA 062-05-11 AA "Farbechtheit von Textilien - Deutsche Echtheitskommission DEK" ("Colour Fastness of Textiles - German Colour Fastness Committee"). ISO 105 has already been published between 1978 and 1985 in thirteen "parts" and a letter has been assigned to every part (for instance "Part A"). Every part contained a number of "clauses", and the corresponding letter of the part and a two-digit serial number (for instance "clause A02") have been assigned to every clause. These clauses are now republished as separate documents and designated as "Parts"; however, the previous alphanumeric designation is maintained. A complete overview of these parts is given in ISO 105-A01. This part of ISO 105 specifies a method for determining the resistance of the colour of textiles of all kinds and in all forms to domestic or commercial laundering procedures used for normal household articles. Industrial and hospital articles are usually subjected to special laundering procedures which may be more severe in some aspects. The colour loss and staining resulting from desorption and/or abrasive action in one single (S) test closely approximates to one commercial or domestic laundering. The results of one multiple (M) test may in some cases be approximated by the results of up to five domestic or commercial launderings at temperatures not exceeding 70 °C. The "M" tests are more severe than the "S" tests because of an increase in mechanical action. These test methods do not reflect the effect of optical brighteners present in commercial washing products. These methods are designed for the detergent and bleach systems given. Other detergent and bleach systems may require different conditions and levels of ingredients. A specimen of the textile is laundered, rinsed and dried together with specified adjacent fabrics. Specimens are laundered under appropriate conditions of temperature, alkalinity, bleaching and abrasive action such that the result is obtained in a conveniently short time. The abrasive action is accomplished by the use of a low liquor ratio and an appropriate number of steel balls. The change in colour of the specimen and the staining of the adjacent fabric or fabrics are assessed by comparison with the grey scales or instrumentally.
