This standard contains relevant specifications set out in Annex I of the EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. This document specifies all significant hazards, hazardous situation and events as listed in clause 4 relevant to stationary and displaceable surface planing and thicknessing machines with an integrated feed in thicknessing mode (with or without demountable power feed unit in planning mode) and with manual loading and unloading of the work-piece, hereinafter referred to as "machines". The cutterblock is fixed in position and for thicknessing an integrated feed is provided. The machines are designed to cut solid wood, chipboard, fibreboard and plywood when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer including reasonably foreseeable misuse. Machines which are designed to work wood based materials may also be used for thicknessing hardened plastic materials with similar physical characteristics as wood. This document does not deal with any hazards which result from the attachment of an optional mortising unit. These hazards are covered by prEN 940:2007. This document does not apply to: a) machines set up on a bench or a table similar to a bench, which are intended to carry out work in a stationary position, capable of being lifted by one person by hand. Transportable motor-operated electric tools are covered by the requirements of EN 61029-1:2000 together with prEN 61029-2-3:2004. b) surface planing and thicknessing machines where the cutterblock is adjustable for depth of cut setting in thicknessing mode; c) machines where the conversion from planing to thicknessing mode or vice versa is achieved by mounting or demounting parts/units; d) machines where surfacing and thicknessing can be performed at the same time. This document is not applicable to surface planing and thicknessing machines which are manufactured before the date of its publication as EN. This document contains the German version of EN 861:2007+A2:2012, which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 142 "Woodworking machines - Safety" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The following significant modifications have been made with respect to DIN EN 861:2010-02: a) in clause 1, the scope has been extended to include machines for working hardened plastic materials with similar physical characteristics as wood; b) normative references have been updated to include the new editions of the cited standards; c) in clause 4, the list of significant hazards has been revised with regard to EN ISO 12100:2010; d) in subclause 5.2.1 "Safety and reliability of control systems", the design requirements for control circuits in certain categories have been replaced by specifications for performance levels; e) in subclause 5.2.1 "Safety and reliability of control systems", subclauses 5.2.1.2 "Use of well-tried components" and 5.2.1.3 "Use of electronic components" have been deleted; f) in subclause 5.2.3, the starting requirements have been revised; g) in subclause 5.3.4, the braking system requirements have been revised; h) further requirements have been included in subclause 5.4.3 "Emission of chips and dust"; i) Annex F "Use of well-tried components" has been deleted; j) Annex G "Use of electric components" has been deleted. During the preparation the national interests were represented by Working Committee NA 060-06-01 AA "Sicherheit" ("Safety") of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Manufacturers' representatives and users of surface planing and thicknessing machines, as well as representatives of professional and trade associations were involved in the preparation of the standard.
