This standard specifies requirements for the safety, strength and durability of bunk beds and high beds. The loads and forces in the strength and durability tests apply to beds with an internal length greater than 140 cm and a maximum bed base width of 120 cm. The dimensional requirements are intended to minimise the risk of accidents, particularly to children. The strength and durability requirements are intended to represent use by one occupant per bed. Safety requirements for other products included in a bunk bed/high bed, for example, a table or storage furniture, are not included in this standard. This document does not apply to bunk beds and high beds used for special purposes, including but not limited to prison, the military and fire brigades. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 042-05-13 AA "Spiegelausschuss zu CEN/TC 207/WG 2 Anforderungen an Kindermöbel" ("Mirror Committee of CEN/TC 207/WG 2 Requirements for children's and nursery furniture") at DIN. This standard includes safety requirements within the meaning of the Produktsicherheitsgesetz (ProdSG) (German Product Safety Act). Where this standard has been identified by the Ausschuss für Produktsicherheit (German Committee for Product Safety) and reference to it has been published in the Gemeinsames Ministerialblatt (German Joint Ministerial Gazette) by the Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin (BAuA) (German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), it is to be presumed that bunk beds and high beds which comply with this standard fulfil the relevant health and safety requirements. Where they comply with the provisions laid down in Section 5 of the Product Safety Act, such products may then be marked with the GS mark (German "safety tested" mark) as awarded to the manufacturer by an authorized "GS organization".
