International standards for lightning protection (for example, IEC 62305-2:2010) provide methods for the evaluation of the lightning risk on buildings and structures. The lightning density of ground flashes, defined as the mean value of lightning to the earth per square kilometre per year, is the first input parameter to perform this assessment. In many regions of the world lightning density is derived from data provided by lightning location systems (LLS). However, no common rule exists to establish requirements for their performance or for the details on the measured data. In order to make the values of lightning density obtained from LLS in different countries reliable and homogeneous, all necessary measures are introduced and commented. Only parameters that are relevant to risk assessment are considered. The responsible committee is DKE/K 251 "Blitzschutzanlagen und Blitzschutzbauteile" ("Lightning protection systems and lightning protection components") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
