Overview

Cableless control systems (CCS) are increasingly being used to provide a user interface for a wide range of machines, which also includes safety functions. The functionality of a CCS and how it is connected to the overall machine control system can therefore influence the safety of machines. The present standard is intended to define the requirements for the functionality of a CCS that is connected to a machine control system as the control unit for the operator of a machine. This standard is addressed to both manufacturers of cableless control systems and to users who specify functionalities related to machine safety (such as stop functions). The extent to which the functionality of a CCS is based on minimizing the risk of a machine is an important selection criterion. It is therefore necessary to select a CCS that provides appropriate control functions with adequate performance in accordance with the risk assessment for the machine. This standard specifies requirements for the functionality and interfacing of cableless (for example, radio, infra-red) control systems that provide communication between operator control station(s) and the control system of a machine. Specific requirements are included for such operator control stations that are portable by the operator. This document does not deal with cableless communication between parts of a machine(s) that are not operator control stations and also does not define any design requirements for the control unit (such as impact resistance). This document is not intended to specify all of the requirements that are necessary for the design and construction of a cableless control system. The requirements set out in this standard are independent of communication protocols. The provisions of this standard apply in addition to the requirements for electrical installations in the relevant parts of the DIN EN 60204 series of standards. The responsible committee is DKE/K 225 "Elektrotechnische Ausrüstung und Sicherheit von Maschinen und maschinellen Anlagen" ("Electrical equipment and safety of machines and mechanical equipment") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
