This part of IEC 62739 provides an evaluating test method for the erosion of the metallic materials with surface processing intended to be used for lead-free wave soldering equipment as a solder bath and other components which are in contact with the molten solder. It aims at prevention of an accident or a fire by predicting a setup and life of a suitable maintenance cycle. Erosion is the phenomenon in which a base material dissolves and becomes thinner by coming into contact with molten solder. In the test, the test piece is mounted on the test equipment's rotating block, which is driven by a motor (which may include a gearbox), then immersed in the molten lead-free solder and rotated to simulate the flow of solder in the wave soldering machine. The depth of erosion is measured after the block has been rotated for a set period of time. The responsible committee is DKE/K 682 "Aufbau- und Verbindungstechnik für elektronische Baugruppen" ("Packaging and interconnection technology for electronic assemblies") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
