The purpose of this International Standard is the specification of standard procedures for the measurement of the ultrasonic power of HITU equipment in liquids within the lower megahertz frequency range based on acoustic radiation force measurement by means of a gravimetric balance and on a calorimetric method (based on the thermal expansion measurement). This standard indicates the sources of error and describes a systematic step-by-step method for the assessment of the overall measurement uncertainty; furthermore, it describes precautions that should be taken and uncertainties that should be taken into account when carrying out the power measurement. It gives practical guidance for determining the acoustic power of the various transducer geometries used for HITU. Contrary to the acoustic radiation force approaches in IEC 61161 which take into account the time-average power, this document describes different power measurement procedures. The responsible committee is DKE/GUK 821.3 "Medizinische Ultraschallgeräte" ("Medical ultrasonic equipment") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
