The use of hexavalent chromium in electrotechnical products is an issue in many regions of the world. The purpose of this document is therefore to provide test methods that allow the electrotechnical industry to determine the content of hexavalent chromium in electrotechnical products in a comparable manner worldwide. This part of the IEC 62321 standard describes procedures to measure hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), quantitatively in samples of polymers and electronics. This method employs organic solvent to dissolve or swell the sample matrix, followed by an alkaline digestion procedure to extract Cr(VI) from samples. Studies have shown that organic/alkaline solution is more effective than acidic solution in extracting Cr(VI) from soluble and insoluble samples. The responsible committee is DKE/K 135 "Erfassung von Stoffen in Produkten der Elektrotechnik" ("Determination of substances in products of the electrotechnical industry") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
This document partially replaces DIN EN 62321:2009-12; VDE 0042-1:2009-12 .
