The standard is applicable to voltage presence indicating systems (VPIS) incorporated in a.c. switchgear and controlgear covered by IEC 62271-200 and IEC 62271-201. Voltage presence indicating systems are devices used to provide information to operators about the voltage condition of the main circuit of the switchgear in which they are installed. The indication of VPIS alone is not sufficient to prove that the system is dead: if operating procedures make it mandatory, voltage detectors according to IEC 61243-1, IEC 61243-2 and IEC 61243-5 shall be used to prove that the system is dead. This standard is also applicable to phase comparators (PC) specifically designed for use with voltage presence indicating systems. With respect to DIN EN 61958 (VDE 0670-502):2002-12, the references have been updated and the degree of protection has been changed to IP2X. The responsible Subcommittee is UK 432.2 "Typgeprüfte Hochspannungs-Schaltanlagen" ("Type-tested controlgear") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
