The standard specifies requirements for gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear in which the insulation is obtained, at least partly, by an insulating gas other than air at atmospheric pressure, for alternating current of rated voltages above 52 kV, for indoor and outdoor installation, and for service frequencies up to and including 60 Hz. The gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear covered by this standard consists of individual components intended to be directly connected together and able to operate only in this manner. The standard completes and amends, if necessary, the various relevant standards applying to the individual components constituting gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear. Compared with DIN EN 62271-203 (VDE 0671-203):2004-11, the structure and the content of IEC 62271-1 have been adopted, harmonized with IEEE C37.122 and supplemented by the new Annexes F "Service continuity" and G "Insulation levels for GIS with rated voltages higher than 800 kV". The responsible committee is Subcommittee DKE/UK 432.2 "Typgeprüfte Hochspannungs-Schaltanlagen" ("Type-tested controlgear") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
