Overview

Integration of production, control and computer systems is always an important topic for enterprises, independent of their size or sector, in order to improve market competitiveness. What is it all about? Simply said, continuous exchange of information between the enterprise functions such as manufacture, planning, material management, personnel, control systems and computer systems shall be correct with regard to content, complete and in a timely manner without delay, a well-known, but only incompletely solved problem. The aim of the standard series DIN EN 62264 is to allow continuous exchange of information in the enterprise and to improve integration regardless of the degree of automation. It influences the tasks of the most close-to-production enterprise units. Worldwide operating enterprises are very interested in it, since various computerized procedures are unified and merged with it and robust and easy integration solutions can be found. The significant benefits for the user are: shorter starting time of the introduction of new products, improved tools for integration, lower automation costs, better opportunities to define user requirements, optimization of the supply chain, etcetera. Therefore the standard is important for both manufacturers as well as users and system integrators. DIN EN 62264 provides a standard terminology for company IT and control systems as well as a set of concepts and modes for integrating enterprise functions. The technical solution is determined by the standard modelling of the interfaces between the enterprise functions and control functions. Fundamental concepts are object modelling as well as the modelling languages UML and XML. Part 1 firstly specifies the system boundaries for, on the one hand, the control systems, and, on the other hand, the management. Furthermore, a standard terminology is developed for the tasks of Level 3 of a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and functionally structured by object models. The responsible committee is DKE/K 931 "Systemaspekte" ("System aspects") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
