Reed switches are contact blades hermetically sealed in an envelope which are magnetically operated. They are used in all fields of electrical engineering and electronics. This standard specifies the terms and definitions, rated values, test and measurement methods and quality assessment procedures for all types of reed switches operated by applying a magnetic field, including magnetically-biased reed switches for general and industrial applications. Due to their possible environmental impact, mercury-wetted reed switches are not covered in this standard. The main changes compared to the previous edition concern the addition of the test of the dielectric strength, the electrical life tests to the maximum electrical life and the electrical overload. The responsible committee is DKE/K 671 "Schaltrelais" ("Relays") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
