Overview

This second edition of the standard applies to the operation of sealed secondary cells and of batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes (except button cells), but in particular, to lithium-ion secondary batteries for use in portable applications (for example mobile phone, laptop). Requirements and tests for safe operation are included. Compared with the previous version, now a distinction between nickel and lithium systems is made in the requirements. In the case of lithium systems, specific requirements have been introduced and the charging range of secondary lithium ion cells for safe use has been defined in the annex. The responsible committee is DKE/K 371 "Akkumulatoren" ("Secondary cells and batteries") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
