Energy efficiency, which is accompanied by an increasing number of audio, video, multimedia and related equipment, is a key for sustainable environmental protection. Uniformly applied measurement provisions are necessary in order to determine and compare the energy consumption of various equipment. This International Standard specifies methods of measurement for the power consumption of television sets, video recording equipment, Set Top Boxes (STBs), audio equipment and multi-function equipment for consumer use. Television sets include, among other things, equipment with Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT), Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD), Plasma Display Panels (PDP) and projection technologies. Moreover, different modes of operation which are important for power consumption are defined. The methods of measurement shall be only applied for such equipment which can be connected to the mains. The measuring conditions in this standard represent the normal use of this equipment and may differ from specific conditions, for example as specified in safety standards. This edition supplements methods of measurement for the power consumption in On (average) mode of television sets as specified in Clause 11. Power consumption of many television sets varies depending on the displayed video signal. Clause 11 contains three different video signals: static signals and signals with dynamic broadcast- and Internet-content signals. Annex C includes information on the three video signals and a guide for using the signals. Annex B includes additional considerations regarding the average power consumption of television sets. The standard has been prepared by IEC/TC 100 "Audio, video and multimedia systems and equipment". The responsible German Committee is national committee K 742 "Audio-, Video- und Multimediasysteme, -geräte und -komponenten" ("Audio, video and multimedia systems, equipment and components") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
