This part of IEC 62053 applies only to newly manufactured static var-hour meters of accuracy classes 2 and 3 for the measurement of alternating current electrical reactive energy in 50 Hz or 60 Hz networks and it applies to their type tests only. For practical reasons, this standard is based on the conventional definition of reactive energy for sinusoidal currents and voltages containing only the fundamental frequency. It applies only to electronic reactive energy meters which are used indoors or outdoors and whose transducer(s) and display(s) are housed together in one enclosure. It also applies to the operating display(s) and the test output(s). If the meter has a measuring element for more than one type of energy (multi-energy meters), or when other functional elements, like maximum demand indicators, electronic tariff registers, time switches, ripple control receivers, data communication interfaces, etcetera are enclosed in the meter case, then the relevant standards for these elements also apply. The responsible committee is DKE/K 461 "Messeinrichtungen und -systeme für Elektrizität" ("Metering equipment and systems for electricity") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
