The standard specifies general and safety requirements for light-emitting diode (LED) modules: - LED modules without integral control gear for operation under constant voltage, constant current or constant power; - self-ballasted LED modules for use on d.c. supplies up to 250 V or a.c. supplies up to 1 000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. This standard specifies additionally that independent modules shall fulfill the requirements stated in DIN EN 60598-1 (VDE 0711-1), including the requirements for the markings of this standard, as for example IP degrees of protection and mechanical conditioning. The labelling of LED modules concerning their suitability for constant voltage or constant current is also described and an icon to label the modules for installation on the packaging or on the module itself has been added. Requirements regarding the thermal management of interchangeable modules is specified in a new clause. General information about thermal aspects of luminaire design can be found in the new annex D. The responsible committee is DKE/UK 521.1 "Elektrische Lampen" ("Electric lamps") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
