The standard specifies particular general and safety requirements for d.c or a.c. supplied electronic ballasts. The supply includes a.c. voltages of up to 1 000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The electronic ballast type is a converter which may contain components for the starting and stabilization for operating a discharge lamp with d.c or a frequency deviating from the supply frequency. The lamps associated with the ballast are specified in DIN EN 60188 "High-pressure mercury vapour lamps", DIN EN 60192 "Low-pressure sodium vapour lamps", DIN EN 60662 "High-pressure sodium vapour lamps", DIN EN 61167 "Metal halide lamps", and other standards for general lighting purposes. Ballasts for fluorescent lamps and for lamps for special applications, for example, theatres and aircraft, are excluded. Through Amendment A1, the test conditions for abnormal operations and Figures 1 and 2 have been revised in clause 17. The Subcommittee responsible for this standard is UK 521.3 "Geräte für Lampen" ("Auxiliaries for lamps") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
This document replaces DIN EN 61347-2-12:2006-03; VDE 0712-42:2006-03 .
