Overview

This part of IEC 61290-4 applies to optical amplifiers (OAs) and optically amplified elementary sub-systems. More specifically, it applies to optical amplifiers using active fibres (optical fibre amplifiers, OFAs) containing rare-earth dopants, such as erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs), presently commercially available, as indicated in IEC 61291-1. Optical amplifiers are used all over the world for modern transfer of data to process and amplify the signals for transfer over long distances. The standard serves manufacturers and users to ensure quality assurance. The responsible committee is Subcommittee UK 412.2 "Komponenten für Kommunikationskabelanlagen" ("Components for communication cabling systems") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
