This part of IEC 61280 describes in detail the execution of field measurements of attenuation on transmission lines in fibre-optic cabling systems using multimode fibre, typically in lengths of up to 2 000 m. The transmission lines can include splices, connectors and other defects. The standard applies to planning offices and technical personnel, who issue tenders to carry out attenuation measurements using power meters or OTDR meters, carry out measurements or check measurement reports for the purpose of acceptance documentation. It provides them with security during the measurement and normalization processes of the measurement setup. The standard series for cabling systems' design guidelines, such as EN 50173, ISO/IEC 11801, ISO/IEC 24702 and ISO/IEC 24764 contain specifications for this type of cabling system. Regarding the test methods of this standard, reference is made to ISO/IEC 14763-3, which supports these design standards. The fibre types addressed here are multimode fibres of category A1a (50/125 µm) and A1b (62,5/125 µm), according to IEC 60793-2-10. Attenuation measurements on transmission lines using other categories of multi-mode fibres can be carried out according to the basic approaches of this document; however, the source conditions for the other categories are not yet sufficiently defined.
