This part of IEC 61280 specifies a method for measuring the encircled flux of a multimode light source. The encircled flux is a measure, as a function of radius, of the fraction of the total power radiating from a multimode optical fibre's core. This allows the qualification of multimode insertion loss measuring devices the accuracy of which would not be high enough for measurements of fibre optic cables for high data rates in the (10, 40, 100 gigabits) Ethernet. The standard provides manufacturers, users and test laboratories with security for the qualification of fibre optic patchcords and transmission routes. The standards DIN EN 61280-4-1 and DIN EN 61300-3-35 should also be taken into consideration. The standard refers to IEC 60793-1-20 and -1-41 and IEC 60793-2-10. Any methods, for which an LED source or a laser source is used as an optical source, shall be carried out applying safety measures according to IEC 60825-1. The responsible Committee is Subcommittee UK 412.2 "Komponenten für Kommunikationskabelanlagen" ("Components for communication cabling systems") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
