This part of IEC 61280 contains definitions and measurement procedures for several wavelengths and spectral width properties of an optical spectrum associated with a fibre optic communication subsystem, an optical transmitter or other light sources used in the operation or test of communication subsystems. This measurement is carried out during installation of a system and/or its maintenance. The optical transmitter for generating signals of the communication subsystem is usually modulated. Different characteristics can be appropriate for different spectral classes, such as the continuous spectrum characteristic of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and multilongitudinal-mode (MLM) spectra, multitransverse-mode (MTM) spectra and single-longitudinal mode (SLM) spectra, which are characteristics of laser diodes (LDs). The standard provides manufacturers and test laboratories with security regarding the definition of a test and serves as a reference for quality assurance. The responsible Committee is Subcommittee UK 412.2 "Komponenten für Kommunikationskabelanlagen" ("Components for communication cabling systems") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
