This standard applies to the protection of persons and livestock against electric shock. The principles and requirements specified in this document apply to both electrical installations and systems and equipment, or are necessary for their coordination. This standard has been prepared for installations, systems and equipment without a voltage limit. The requirements of this standard are only applicable if they are incorporated in other standards or if reference is made to them in these standards. This standard is not intended to be used as a stand-alone standard. This standard is a basic safety standard for protection against electric shock. Compared with DIN EN 61140 (VDE 0140-1):2007-03, the following significant changes have been made: a) clause Terms modified and supplemented; b) requirements for additional protection included; c) requirements for protection against electrical burns included; d) requirements for protective conductor currents have been specified and incorporated into the normative part of the text; e) clarification of the isolating characteristics of protective devices; f) IEC 60449 (voltage ranges) integrated; g) requirement included that protective measures against burns shall also be considered in product standards; h) consideration of effects of the electrical current that do not cause lasting damage to health, such as muscle cramps, included for the first time. The responsible committee is DKE/K 221 "Elektrische Anlagen und Schutz gegen elektrischen Schlag" ("Electrical installations and protection against electric shock") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
This document replaces DIN EN 61140:2007-03; VDE 0140-1:2007-03 .
