This International Standard applies to residual current operated circuit-breakers (RCBO), the function of which is independent or dependent on the mains voltage, for household and similar uses, with rated voltages not exceeding 440 V AC and rated currents not exceeding 125 A for fixed installations and rated fault breaking capacity not exceeding 25 000 A. These devices are intended to protect people from indirect contact, with the conductive, accessible parts of the installation connected to a suitable earthing contact, and to protect against overcurrents in installations in buildings and similar uses. They can be used to prevent fire hazards as a result of long-term earth fault currents without the overcurrent protection device responding. RCBOs with rated residual currents not exceeding 30 mA are also used as a means of additional protection against electric shock in the event of failure of the protective measure. This standard contains changes to the specific national conditions. The responsible committee is Subcommittee DKE/UK 541.3 "Fehlerstrom-Schutzeinrichtungen" ("Residual current devices") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
